Did you ever wake up in the morning , take a look in the mirror, and feel that you. all of a sudden, look older? Those lines and wrinkles seem to have appeared over night.

The aging process is slow. It occurs at different rates in different people. General changes in the face that occur with aging include: loss of fat, bone and skin elasticity. Over time the effects of gravity cause drooping or sagging of the skin and deeper structures of the cheeks, eyelids, nose, and chin, The result is wrinkles and jowls in the face.

FROM 30 TO 40

The upper eyelids start to hang and wrinkling or crow's feet appear at the outer corners of the eyes. The folds from the nose to the corner of the mouth deepen as they begin to droop.

FROM 40 TO 50

The lower eyelid bags appear, glabellar (between the eyebrows 11's) and forehead wrinkles appear. The outer brows begin to sag. Cheek fat begins to fall downward towards the jawline. Loss of fat in the face becomes evident with deepening of the surface contour in the temple area and cheeks appear flattened. In some, the eyes become sunken as a result of fat loss rather than forming eyelid bags.

FROM 50 TO 60

The neck wrinkles, jowls (uneven jawline), and marionette lines appear. More of the eyebrow sags. The nasal tip droops. The lips thin and wrinkles around the mouth appear.

FROM 60-70

The facial skin thins. There is more fat loss in the cheek and temples and the skin becomes spotty giving rise to brown spots of the back of hand and face (senile lentigo). During the course of this aging process the shape of the face changes from a triangle with the apex pointing downward or U-shaped outline to a trapezoid or rectangle due to sagging skin and downward sag of the cheek soft tissues. This change is more noticeable in the female face.

A variety of non-surgical modalities are available to reverse or slow the progression of this aging process. Non-surgical techniques include prophylactic measures such as the use of sun screens, avoidance of active or passive smoking, avoidance of prolonged exposure to extreme cold, wind etc, and the use of a variety of creams, ointments, or acid/fruit peels.

BOTOX temporarily paralyzes muscle beginning about 3-7 days after being injected into the muscle. The results can be dramatic and last around 3 months. Many wrinkles may respond to botox injection as long as the wrinkles are not severe.

Restylane and Juvederm are made of hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance found in skin, muscles, and tendons. They are both approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Their primary use is in softening the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lines around the mouth, deep lines of the forehead, and the lips. Their effects can last anywhere from 6-9 months. When the University of Michigan organized a study on the dermal filler Restylane -- a close chemical sibling of Juvéderm—researchers found that hyaluronic acid stretches cells in skin known as fibroblasts in a way that causes the skin to create new collagen. The new collagen helps decrease the appearance of facial creases and wrinkles. An unexpected—and welcome—finding cropped up: hyaluronic acid also seems to stop the breakdown of existing collagen.

Restylane, Juvederm and Botox injections are performed in the office. A numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. You may experience some minimal discomfort from the needle injection. Depending on the extent of treatment, the procedure can take about 20 minutes.Usual, expected side effects include temporary redness, pain and tenderness during injections and swelling and bruising at the injection sites.
